Over the years of coaching, I think building a connection with your athletes has been one of the most important things. Once they trust you, respect you and know you believe in them —the buy in and rest tends to follow. I personally feel it’s important to develop character traits and the importance of what a team sport can do for you the rest of your lives. Some athletes aren’t there to play at a collegiate level. Teaching the athletes to compete and how to respect their teammates is imperative. The benefits of being in a team sport are insurmountable. There are so many life lessons and character building that hopefully will follow them the rest of their adult life. Each athlete may need a diff style to be motivated and driven to success. The succes for each one will be unique to them as well. I’m a parent and I’m a coach. I will say being a parent coach while coaching your own kids has its own obstacles for your child and myself. As a parent, the wins are not as important to me as the wins they have within themselves growing to be better humans. Each one of my own children have their own personal goals for each season skill wise, mentally, physically, and emotionally. My hope is that they can achieve those from a parent perspective. Coaches have the ability to change lives forever in a positive or negative way. We can be one of the most impactful people their lives. At the end of the day as a coach to my athletes I hope I have impacted them in a positive way.
